| Abstract | This presentation provides lessons learned from the USAID-funded RANO WASH project in Madagascar. It describes: the steps taken to operationalise public-private partnerships (PPPs) for rural water services; performance and viability of water service providers; the impact on service levels; and key considerations for future investments in water PPPs in rural areas. It concludes with 9 critical success factors: 1. appropriate allocation and sharing of risks; 2. political engagement; 3. a strong private platform; 4. effective regulation – zero corruption; 5. effective decentralisation; 6. rural financial sustainability - consolidating systems; 7. public community engagement; 8. other sources of funds; and 9. attractive and adaptable products to scale up access. |
