Dear friends,
If 2020 was all about the initial reaction to Covid-19 then 2021 has been about learning to live with a new and unpredictable normal, making ourselves more resilient as we do so. In the year of COP26, building to create resilience for whatever a turbulent future holds became more essential than ever – whether that is for IRC as an organisation or for the water, sanitation and hygiene systems with which we work.
Despite not being able to see each other as much as we like, I see it as a huge achievement that we managed to cement a truly innovative alliance with our friends at Water For People, committing ourselves jointly to an exciting and hugely ambitious vision for 2030. Destination 2030 will guide both our organisations over the next eight years underpinned by a shared vision of creating the strong national and local systems that will deliver the dream of universal, safe and sustainable access to everyone.
I’m also proud that this was the year that IRC committed to a new organisational vision; to transform ourselves into a networked organisation by 2025. In practice this is all about putting leadership where it belongs – with the people, and in the countries where we do our work and deliver our impact.
As we look forward to delivering on our vision next year, we count on your continued partnership and support. I remain as convinced as ever that the only way that we will deliver on the Sustainable Development Goals is by connecting across sectors and silos, stepping beyond generations, hierarchies and professional identities, supporting one another and joining in collective action.
So, to all of you, our partners, fellow travellers and supporters, I wish you an excellent end of the year, happy holidays and look forward to seeing you (hopefully physically!) in 2022, maybe in our All Systems Go! Africa symposium in October 2022.
