Abstract

On July 15, 2019 the Government of Odisha, India, launched the Odisha Swachh Vidyalaya Puraskar (OSVP) – an annual award for water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) in schools. This booklet, developed by UNICEF in collaboration with IRC, is a compilation of best practices in WASH from 15 prize winning schools. It serves as a guide for implementing WASH in schools initiatives. Each of the 15 case studies describes efforts and innovations undertaken by the schools, the results of the interventions and lessons learned. The booklet concludes with recommendations for the way forward and UNICEF India's list of six essential requirements for successful WASH in schools programmes. The selection criteria for the awards are included in an annex.
