Abstract

Urban India generates about 50,000 million litres per day (MLD) of sewage of which only about a fifth is treated, while few villages having any arrangements to handle wastewater. This briefing note is a synthesis of an expert panel discussion on wastewater challenges and solutions, which took place in Mumbai, India, on 18 November 2018. IRC, SuSanA India Chapter and India Sanitation Coalition with the support of the Ecosan Services Foundation organised the dialogue as part of the Insights series.  The topics covered include sewage, faecal sludge and grey water management in rural and urban areas.  To address the almost unmanageable wastewater problem in India requires a holistic approach for both urban and rural areas, looking at water resources on which they draw from (and to which they return).
