Abstract

Research shows that water, sanitation and hygiene services (WASH) in schools can be a powerful agent for societal change.  This briefing note is a synthesis of an expert panel discussion on “WASH in schools: a way forward for Odisha”, which took place in Bhubaneswar, India, on May 17, 2018. The discussion focused on the importance of giving equal attention to both infrastructure provision and maintenance for WASH in schools. It started by examining relevant national policies, initiatives and monitoring systems related to WASH in schools. This was followed by an analysis of the gaps and challenges. Key recommendations for various stakeholders, ranging from school management committees (SMCs) to local government, NGOs and the private sector, and from students to senior citizens are provided.
