Abstract | This qualitative research study aims to provide key lessons to improve sanitation outcomes for rural Indian households. The study was conducted over a period of 3 months (from January to March 2017) in two Indian rural districts: one with a high population density and situated in a heavy clay silt agricultural plain (Samastipur district, Bihar) and the other with a low population density situated in a sandy tropical coast (Ganjam district, Odisha). The study examines sanitation challenges and problems from the perspective of different stakeholders: government bodies (enables), sanitation programs (aggregators), financing institutions (supporters), sanitation entrepreneurs (implementers) and rural households (customers). It concludes with lessons for each stakeholder group. |
