Abstract

This book brings together academic research and the evolving practical understanding of activists to explore the topic of social and political change. Drawing on examples from the global experience of Oxfam and others working on international development, it tests ideas on How Change Happens and what works to achieve progressive change.

The book is divided into 4 parts. Part 1 outlines the power and systems approach (PSA) to change; Part 2 looks at the main institutions behind change processes from a historical perspective; Part 3 discusses what activists can and can’t do to bring about change, and Part 4 explores the implications for individual activists and their organisations.
