Abstract

This story is about action research carried out by the Dutch WASH Alliance to improve health conditions in the Afar region of northern Ethiopia. The Alliance is supporting Amref Health Africa to construct public toilets and showers in places where large numbers of people gather.

Key findings from the action research are:

  • Amref Health Africa has built showers and toilets for 2,400 people
  • local youth earn a living running a washhouse at a busy bus station
  • pastoralist communities adopt simple pit latrines instead of open defecation
  • district government increased its budget for safe water, sanitation and hygiene by 30%
