Abstract

City sanitation strategy planning in Indonesia focuses on equal involvement of women and men in all sanitation services. In the six cities taking part in an ISSDP programme poor women, men and children work in the informal sector for solid waste collection, segregation and recycling, as labourer and some as entrepreneurs. The work is an important source of income for poor families and helps reduce poverty in the six cities.

In Banjarmasin, the capital of Kalimantan, men and women in a middle class community joined to compost organic waste and organised self-help actions to preserve the 'green, clean and hygiene' characteristics of their neighbourhood. They use the compost and liquid fertilizer in their joint vegetable plot and for sales. Proceeds go to the Self Help Group (KSM) fund and have already helped to pave roads and make a badminton court and a communal meeting ground.
