Abstract

India’s Child Environment Programme is UNICEF’s largest, oldest and one of the most diverse water, sanitation and hygiene programmes. UNICEF has compiled four modules for learning from its successes and failures. One module is “rural sanitation”. This reflects the lessons from two states that have made rapid progress: West Bengal since the 1990s and Maharashtra in this century. Other modules: Wise water management (Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan); WASH in schools (Tamil Nadu and Utar Pradesh) and   Arsenic mitigation : Challenges and opportunities (Bihar and West Bengal).
