Abstract | The focus of this publication is on Urine Diverting Dry Toilet (UDDT) systems. It includes design and maintenance guidelines for UDDT in schools, and photographs of the systems used in the project countries. The UDD toilet can be built inside the school like a water flush toilet, which provides a comfortable solution. Compared to conventional toilets, UDDTs offer the possibility to explain the inter-linkages between ecology, agriculture, nutrient- and water-cycles to the pupils in combination with hygiene education. Through the demonstration projects in different countries of the Eastern Europe, Caucasus and Central Asia region, WECF has shown that improved sanitation facilities can be provided at less cost than flush-toilets which need to be connected to central water supply and sewerage systems. Key success factors in the use of UDDT systems were: good education of pupils, teachers, care takers and cleaning staff; regular cleaning and maintenance of the UDDT; and early involvement of all stakeholders. The publication is intended for school-directors and teachers, administration-employees, engineers, architects and construction workers from the field and NGOs. |
