Abstract

This handbook, unlike other publications about water awareness who limit themselves to a clearly defined field of study, covers the entire water field from water conservation to hygiene education, from wet ecosystem preservation to the support of participatory interventions, from policy change to the raising of water awareness amongst youngsters. It is designed to help communication specialists and water professionals raise awareness and encourage public action towards a better use and management of water. It discusses awareness raising strategies and the planning of campaigns.
One of the problems with existing information is its fragmentation. Usually, information is only available as project documentation, offering general overviews of projects and focusing on various topics besides awareness raising. Systematic exchange of awareness raising ideas is difficult. Documentation, with experiences from more than one initiative is often limited to one part of the water sector, for example, only basic education on water conservation or promotion of education on hygiene. Much can be learnt by exchanging and comparing experiences of different initiatives within the water sector. The number of unique awareness raising initiatives in the water sector is surprisingly large. This book attempts to bring together the many ideas developed in these initiatives. Sometimes, they will be combined with suggestions from communications theory and commercial marketing, but the emphasis will remain on practical suggestions and clues. It does not intend to be a comprehensive how-to-do book, but is meant to be a source of inspiration and a starting point for new ideas and initiatives.
