Abstract

This publication explores lessons learned that can help other nations in their efforts to provide universal WES coverage for their citizens. It is based on the evaluation of UNICEF's Water and Environmental Sanitation Programme in India from 1966 to 1998.
It includes chapters on Coverage, on the background of the increase in access to water and sanitation; Technology, on the success of adaptation of equipment to local conditions and of local manufacturing; Behavioural Change, on the change to community-based and gender-sensitive strategies; Partnerships, on co-operation with India's national and state governments, NGOs, and private sector; Lessons from India, listing the 10 most important lessons learned; and A timeline of WES policy in India.
