Abstract

This volume presents an assessment of evaluation as democratic deliberation from both theoretical and practice perspectives. First, a framework that defines dimensions for assessing democratic deliberation is presented. These dimensions - inclusion, dialogue, and deliberation -are then illustrated in a series of case studies from the United States organized around a set of core questions about, for example, the meaning of and basis for inclusion, dialogue, and democratic deliberation in specific cases; how inclusion, dialogue, and deliberation were accomplished; and the kinds of barriers that are encountered in practice. The practical challenges to evaluation as democratic deliberation are featured. Broader issues of theory and practice that are likely to engage evaluators in dialogue and deliberation about evaluation as a democratic deliberation in the future are discussed throughout this volume.
