Abstract

Based on a theoretical model predicting a descending order of risks of pathogen transmission by irrigation with raw wastewater and on epidemiological research, a new microbiological quality guideline for intestinal nematodes and faecal coliforms is proposed. Public health protection can be attained by wastewater treatment, crop selection, appropriate wastewater application and human exposure control. Recommendations are provided on technical and institutional aspects, national policies on agricultural reuse schemes and research needs.
