This report addresses water conservation and drought management in the Southern African Development Community (SADC)'s urban areas. SADC includes Angola, Botswana, Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Lesotho, Malawi, Mauritius, Mozambique, Namibia, Seychelles, Swaziland, South Africa, Tanzania, Zambia and Zimbabwe. The main objective of the report is to help the reader determine what is the water conservation potential for water utilities within his or her own country, province or town. The report covers the following topics: understanding urban water demand and how to calculate demand; sample water demand data in the SADC region; how water conservation potential can be calculated; various water conservation methods; water conservation practised by some SADC utilities; roadblocks and negative impacts regarding water conservation; and a suggested "step forward" regarding water conservation.
