Abstract

This publication contains the proceedings of the Regional Seminar on Water Management in Urban Areas held at Bangkok from 22 to 26 March 1993. The report of the Seminar is in part one. Part two consists of background papers presented by the ESCAP secretariat consultants, resource persons and representatives of international organizations and agencies. Subjects covered include: a. urban water management issues in the ESCAP region; b. urban water management problems; c. how to serve the unserved in cities; d. environmental impacts of urban water management; e. technical and management aspects of the sustainable use of groundwater resources in urban areas; f. the basic issues of urban water supply management; g. privatization in Malaysia; h. urban sanitation in Asia and the Pacific - issues and emerging trends; i. urbanization, sanitation and groundwater contamination; j. low-cost wastewater disposal system (Bangkok); and k. achieving compliance with wastewater standards. Part three contains the country papers submitted by the participants, some of which are in an abridged or summarized form.
