Abstract

Kitui, Kanuku and Kinyago villages are unplanned peri-urban areas in Nairobi, Kenya. These settlements which are situated on the slopes overlooking Nairobi river, suffer from frequent flooding. Pit latrines collapse and sullage does not drain away. The authors propose to solve the problem of sullage disposal by constructing a sand-filter trench which treats the effluent before it is discharged into the river. In addition a graded eucalyptus tree zone should be developed to improve both water uptake from water-logged soils and the porosity of the alluvial soil and consequently the infiltration rate of the sand-filter trench. Finally the river channel should be deepened and lined.
