Abstract

The frequent droughts that plague North-Eastern Brazil have taken a heavy toll on the region's agriculture, and its economic and social conditions. Climate and physical condition of the region present major obstacles to water access. This is compounded by irregular rains, scarcity of water bodies and the difficulty to exploit available groundwater. Water supply is limited because of intense evaporation and a lack of rainfall. The municipality of Pintada is representative of the majority of rural communities in the Northeast where there is no running water, due to the absence of a water distribution infrastructure. People are responsible for their own water supply and they somehow have to cope with it. This study focuses on the people's daily struggle for water which they have to obtain outside their homes, bring back, and store in appropriate containers for later use. It analyzes this daily ritual which consists of collecting, transporting and storing water. It also examines methods of collection and transportation, problems and practices.
