Abstract

Proceedings of the Workshop on Sustainable and Environmentally Sound Development of Water Resources held in Bangkok, Thailand from 28 October to 1 November 1991. The publication is presented in three parts: part one consists of the report of the Workshop; part two contains the background papers presented by the secretariat, consultants, and representatives of international organisations and agencies. It provides an overview of the water resources situation in Asia and the Pacific, deals with the concepts and principles of sustainable and environmentally sound development of water resources, and discusses the sustainability and soundness of water reservoirs, concluding with a case study from Tanzania; part three contains the country papers of twelve participating countries. The Workshop participants express the need to formulate and implement national policies for sustainable and environmentally sound development of water resources following the detailed recommendations in the proceedings. These include the need for assessment of water resources and their uses, an integrated approach to water resources development and management, water demand assessment and management, water resources protection, and human resources development.
