Abstract

The workshop was designed to help build the capacity of the Caribbean region's health education professionals to carry out their roles in national cholera plans. Specifically, the workshop had three aims: a. to develop the participants' understanding of the relationship between hygiene education and cholera; b. to improve their ability to develop effective hygiene education programmes for cholera prevention and control, and c. to develop training skills in these areas. Arising from the workshop, the following recommendations were made: i. allow time to field test a revised data collection instrument; ii. allot more time to develop and test messages; iii. receive an update on the latest thinking in health education, and iv. visit a depressed area to experience the local reality. During the workshop participants learned to identify high risk behaviours, collect data about those behaviours from high risk target groups, and develop hygiene education messages aimed at reducing the risk of cholera transmission. The participants were also encouraged to develop strategies for applying their newly learnt skills in their own countries.
