Abstract | This is the revised edition of the technology information package on defluoridation. It describes the Nalgonda technique developed and tested by the National Environmental Research Institute (NEERI) in India. The report begins with brief accounts of different forms of fluorosis and the incidence of excessive fluoride in groundwater in India. This is followed by a chapter on water quality testing for defluoridation plants. The Nalgonda technique involves the addition of alum, lime and bleaching powder followed by rapid mixing, flocculation, sedimentation, filtration and disinfection. Design details are given for defluoridation at domestic level as well as for treatment plants for small communities (200 people), rural water supply and for large scale community water supply (more than 5,000 people). Cost estimates and performance results of existing rural and large scale treatment plants are provided. |
