| Abstract | This project start-up workshop for the Ghana Rural Water Project in the Greater Afram Plains, was convened to isolate and discuss all the key issues that might ensure the programme's sustainability. The main objective was develop a detailed strategy and action plan. The second objective was to promote and strengthen the District's resource capacity to undertake the rural water supply and sanitation programme based on community management. Key issues which were thought to be of importance to the programme's implementation, monitoring and supervision included: a. Infrastructure development (access road) b. servicing of pumps c. provision of financial/logistic support d. monitoring and supervision of the project (need for accountability) e. security/safety of pumps and equipment f. management of the project g. education of communities on project activities/programmes h. provision of technical/managerial support i. training and equipping of village level maintenance team j. land acquisition k. illiteracy l. project sustainability m. developing the final list of communities to benefit from the boreholes. Each of these issues were discussed in detail and various recommendations were made. |
