Abstract

This working paper examines household environmental problems in the Accra Metropolitan Area (AMA) of Ghana. Accra is the major industrial growth centre of the country. An overview is given of environmental problems related to: water supply, sanitation, air pollution, solid waste, pests and pesticides, food contamination, and housing stress. Serious problems exist in all categories, and particularly in poor neighbourhoods. Poverty is the most fundamental factor inhibiting improvement. However, institutional inadequacies and a lack of understanding of Accra's environmental problems are compounding the effects of poverty.
