Abstract

This is a film about the SIDA supported integrated health, sanitation and water supply programme HESAWA. It attempts to show how the programme works in rural areas in the Lake Regions (Kagera, Mara, and Mwanza) of Tanzania. The programme aims to improve the health situation through the introduction of safe water supply and sanitation supported by health education. Ownership of facilities is encouraged to ensure sustainability of the programme as villagers have to take over the responsibility for operation and maintenance. HESAWA has arranged training on technical and maintenance aspects, including the training of local craftsmen in building latrines. Organizational aspects of HESAWA are also shown.
