Abstract

Data are presented on the status of safe water supply and sanitation in developing countries after 8 years of the International Drinking Water Supply and Sanitation Decade, which started in 1980. The results of the survey are presented in tables and figures with comments and analyses. The report has the same structure as the 1980 WHO review of national baseline data to facilitate the comparison of conditions in 1988 and 1980 in Africa, the Americas, South-East Asia, the Eastern Mediterranean and the Western Pacific region. [Data on Europe are presented in a separate document]. The report evaluates targets, planning, staff, training, financial resources, constraints, and Decade approaches in both rural and urban areas in each region as well as on a global scale. in spite of the constraints and the differences between regions advances can be observed globally.
