Abstract

The connection between water supply, sanitation and health is described. The case with which water can become polluted is shown, and especially the dangers of human excreta are discussed. Septic tanks, VIP latrines and flush toilets are shown in relation to water and sanitation projects concerning piped water supply, wells, pumps and roof catchment. Community participation and appropriate technology are emphasized as being key elements for the success of projects. The importance of maintenance is stressed. The work of health workers and their role in involving the community is discussed.
