SaniFaso—a Burkina Faso based programme aimed at building 16,000 latrines in 12 communes throughout the country—is looking at hygiene interventions and use of sanitation facilities in the focus communes. On 12 July, during the final WASHCost team project meeting, members of the WASHCost Burkina Faso team shared news that SaniFaso has taken on the life-cycle cost service levels concept and is applying it to their programme activities.

Using the WASHCost methodology, SaniFaso developed a tailor-made tool—in the form of an Excel spreadsheet—for local technicians to collect and monitor life-cycle costs of sanitation and hygiene services in Burkina Faso. Costs and key hygiene practices are being surveyed to monitor SaniFaso interventions and to gather evidence on what’s working and what isn’t, and at what cost. SaniFaso’s study will serve as a useful test-bed and reflection process for applying the life-cycle costs approach on hygiene interventions.
